2023 Artist Statement
The foundation of my artwork concentrates on an abstraction of landscapes. My subjects are derived from aerial or satellite views of locations that may have been created or altered by humans. They vary from architecture, transportation, extraction sites, recreational and historic areas. Each piece begins with loose or blind contour drawing of an area, and transforms into a finished, multimedia piece. The base reflects the unknown and uncontrolled actions from the hand, while the colors and detail may reference the original environment. This process echoes the difficulty of controlling everything that happens to our surroundings, and the outcome can be unpredictable. In addition, the macro-level inspired detail is intended to bring three-dimensionality to an otherwise flattened perspective. I aspire to seduce the viewer into my artworks through my use of color and lines to question the present landscape.
